i) Explain land use pattern in India and why has the land under forest not increased much since 1960-61?
Answer:
- Land resources in India are divided into forests, agricultural land, permanent pastures, grazing land, land used for buildings, roads, factories, culturable waste land, fallow land etc.
- The land under permanent pastures had decreased.
- Forest area in the country is far lower than the desired 33% of geographical area.
- A part of the land is termed as wasted land and land put to other non-agricultural uses such as settlements, roads, railways, industry, etc. Waste lands includes rocky, arid and desert areas.
ii) How have technical and economic development led to more consumption of resources?
Answer:
- During the early period, man did not have much needs. His only concern was food and shelter. Generally he fulfilled his need from forests and wild animals.
- As he progressed his needs increased , technologies came into being and he began to discover new things. This led to his economic development.
- These days man has been using numerous resources with the help of new inventions and technology and rapid use of these resources have been causing their depletion.
- On account of technical and economic progress, population are increasing due to low mortality at all ages. With the development of medicine and health facilities, death rate decrease.
- This increasing population has contributed to the rapid consumption of resources.
